1975 Land Rover Series III 88 Hard Top | Full Restoration
This Land Rover Series III 88 was stripped down to a bare chassis and rebuilt one component at a time in a full nut and bolt restoration. It’s finished in a soft baby blue, and the hard top gives it a proper closed cab and that boxy classic profile. It keeps its original 2.25 litre petrol engine and original gearbox, and both were completely rebuilt. It is currently for sale for $47,000 USD.
The Series III was the last generation of the Series line. It kept the simple, tough engineering of the earlier cars and added a few improvements that make it easier to live with today. This one was restored with that in mind: honest and mechanical, but rebuilt properly enough to use and enjoy.
The Hard Top
The hard top is a big part of why this car works so well. It encloses the cab, keeps the weather out, and gives the short 88 inch body the upright, squared off look most people picture when they think of an old Land Rover. Next to the baby blue paint, it gives the car a lot of charm.
It also makes the car more usable. You can drive it through a wet winter or leave it parked outside without worrying about a canvas roof.
Chassis
Everything started with the frame. The original chassis was stripped completely, sandblasted and acid dipped to get rid of decades of rust and grime, then finished in a static paint coating for long term protection.
Mounting points, structural brackets and hardware were all checked and restored before anything went back on.
Engine and Gearbox
The original 2.25 litre petrol engine is still in the car, and it was completely rebuilt. It was taken apart, the cylinders were bored and fitted with new sleeves, the camshaft was replaced and most of the internals were renewed, bringing it back to factory specification.
The original four speed gearbox, with synchromesh on all four gears (one of the Series III upgrades), was fully overhauled as well. Its aluminium casing was given a nickel plating finish of the kind used on firearms. It protects the surface and looks better than bare aluminium.
Axles, Brakes, Fuel and Cooling
The front and rear differentials were rebuilt, along with the bearings, axles and driveshafts. The braking system was overhauled from end to end.
The car also got a new fuel tank, a new radiator and a Britpart carburettor, so the rebuilt engine has new supporting parts around it rather than old ones.
Wiring
The old wiring loom was removed and replaced with a brand new one from front to back. Patching decades old wiring one section at a time is how old cars end up with electrical gremlins, so we replaced all of it.
Body and Paint
No old body panels were reused. The steel panels are all new, and the aluminium parts were made in house to original Land Rover dimensions. The bonnet was hand built in aluminium and carries the spare wheel, the way a Series should.
We spent a lot of time on panel gaps, mounting points and proportions so the short wheelbase Series III shape comes out right.
The body was then prepared and painted in three stages: epoxy primer, the baby blue colour coat, and an acrylic top layer. The result is a finish that looks good up close and will hold up.
Interior
The cabin keeps the plain, practical layout that suits a Series III. It has new seats trimmed in leather and a new steering wheel. The rear cargo floor is hand laid teak, which adds a bit of warmth to what is otherwise a working vehicle.
Air conditioning and power steering can be added on request.
The Finished Car
What you get is a Series III 88 Hard Top with its original engine and gearbox, rebuilt properly, and nearly everything around them renewed: a treated and coated chassis, rebuilt axles and brakes, new wiring, new body panels, fresh paint and a new interior. It looks and drives like a classic Land Rover should, and it’s ready for its next owner.
