How to Choose a Trustworthy Land Rover Restoration Shop

Trusting a restoration company isn’t so different from trusting a person with something valuable. There’s a rare vehicle involved, a serious budget, and a process that usually takes months. If something goes wrong, it’s not easy to undo.

That’s what makes “reputable Land Rover restoration shop” such a loaded search. Good photos aren’t hard to find. What’s behind them is the real question.

Below is what we think actually matters when evaluating a shop, not just for us, but for anyone shopping around.

Who is actually doing the work?

A shop claiming years of experience and a shop that actually has it don’t always look the same on paper. Our team has spent over 10 years working on Land Rover Defender and Series models, several with backgrounds at Falcon Design, a well-regarded restoration company. A fair question to ask any shop: who specifically strips this vehicle down, and who reassembles it? If the answer comes with real names, that’s a good sign.

Can you actually see the process, or just a “we’ll call you when it’s done”?

Waiting months without visibility is hard, especially when the car is being built abroad. We do biweekly video calls and share GoPro footage from inside the workshop throughout the build. The chassis coming apart, the welding, the engine rebuild, all of it is visible as it happens, not delivered as a highlight reel at the end.

Does the location matter?

Hearing “restored in Türkiye” can raise an eyebrow the first time. It’s an understandable reflex, but it doesn’t hold up. Türkiye has a deep, old tradition in metalwork and hand fabrication, the same reason a lot of Europe’s high-end restoration and coachbuilding work happens in the region rather than elsewhere. Location here isn’t a compromise. If anything, it’s an advantage.

Why do prices vary so much between shops?

Two shops can quote wildly different numbers for what looks like the same Defender restoration. That’s normal, because the scope behind the number is rarely the same. A comparable build in the US or UK typically costs meaningfully more. Our approach is to pass that difference on without cutting quality to do it.

Questions worth asking before you commit

  • Who is physically building this car?
  • How will I be able to follow the process?
  • How is the chassis and engine work actually handled?
  • Can I see vehicles you’ve already completed?
  • What happens if something’s wrong after delivery?

If you can’t get a straight answer, that’s an answer too.
